Rebecca E. "Becky" Koenig, 17, 01757 Lock Two
Road., New Bremen, died at approxiamately 7:45 a.m. Tuesday,
Jan.9, 2001, west of New Bremen from injuries she sustained
in a traffic accident. She was born Dec. 21, 1983, in St.
Marys, the daughter of Steven and Suzanne (Miller) Koenig of
New Bremen. Other survivers include a sister, Anna Koenig and
a brother, Tyler Koenig, both of the home; maternal
grandfather Richard Miller of St. Marys; paternal
grandparents Daryl and Louise Koenig of New Bremen and
paternal great-grandmother Luella WITTENBRINK of New Bremen.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Jessie
Miller. A member of the Class of 2002 at the New Bremen High
school, Ms. Koenig was a baptized and confirmed member of the
United Methodist Church in New Knoxville and a member of the
church youth group. She was employed as a supervisor at the
Kentucky Fried Chicken in New Bremen. Funeral services will
be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in New
Knoxville with the Rev. Mitch Arnold officiating. Burail will
follow in the German Protestant Cemetery in New Bremen.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the
Gilberg Funeral Home in New Bremen. Memorials may be
directed to the American Cancer Society, the Auglaize School
or the New Bremen High School Scholarship Foundation.

Pauline E. Martin, 92, formerly of Dayton, died Tuesday, Jan.
9, 2001, at the Valley Nursing Home in St. Marys. She was
born Sept. 11, 1908, in Greenville, the daughter of Frank and
Ida Belle (Childers) Martin. Survivors include a daughter,
Carol (Sam) KITTLE of St. Marys; five grandchildren, Faith
(Roger) PARR of Mendon, Hope Kittle of New Knoxville, Naaman
Kittle of St. Marys, Mike (Sheila) Kittle of Van Buren, Ark.,
and Ken (Kara) Kittle of High Point, N.C.; and six great-
grandchildren. Ms. Martin was formerly a part-time day care
assistant at the Auglaize-Mercer CHC. She resided in Dayton
for 63 years. Funenal services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at
the Carrigan & Mains Funeral Home in Dayton. Burial will
follow at Abbottsville Cemetery in Abbottsville. Friends may
call from noon until the time of the service Thursday at the
funeral home.

Additional Information: Richard R. Kelley, 74, of Wapakoneta,
died at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998 at his residence.
He was born Sept. 16, 1924 in Auglaize County to Richard P.
and Stella (Fitzpatrick) Kelley. Survivors include two
daughters and one son-in-law, Connie SCHULER of Wapakoneta,
and Shirley and Dale ROTHE of Wapakoneta; eight
grandchildren, Eric Schuler of Wapakoneta, Kelley Schuler,
also of Wapakoneta, Craig Schuler of Columbus, Marcia KROGMAN
of Mendon, Daniel Rothe of St. Marys, and Cindy, Ginger and
Jill Rothe, also of Wapakoneta; a brother, Bernard Kelley of
New Bremen; and four sisters, Lucille BAYLEY of Fenton,
Michigan, Gertrude RIPPLOH of Minster, Ruth FINK of St. Marys
and Elizabeth "Betty Ann" SAMPSON, also of St.
Marys. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Thomas H.
Schuler, a brother, Francis "Frank" Kelley, and a
sister, Beradine ISENBERGER. Mr. Kelley was an independent
wildcat truck driver. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic
Church in Wapakoneta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held
at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday Dec. 15, 1998 at St. Joseph Catholic
Church with the Rev. William O'Donnell officiating. Burial is
to follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Wapakoneta. The family
will receive friends from 5-8 at the Bayliff & Eley
Funeral Home in Wapakoneta. A parish wake service will be
held at 8 p.m. Monday.

formerly of 6953 Ohio 219, Celina, died at 9 a.m. Sunday,
Dec. 13, 1998 at Lost Creek Care Center, Lima. She was born
Feb. 22, 1920 in Marion, Indiana to Samuel E. and Sarah
Louise (Miller) Berry. She had been married to Paul E. Franks
and Norman Green, who are both deceased. Survivors include a
daughter-in-law, Virginia Franks of New Knoxville, four
granddaughters, Barbara Franks of Wapakoneta, Tammy CLARK of
New Knoxville, Leslie Franks of Wapakoneta and Rebecca
ROSTORFER, also of Wapakoneta; one grandson, George Franks of
Ft. Benning, Georgia; 17 great-grandchildren; four brothers,
James Berry of Merryville, Ind., Gerald Berry of Mendon,
Harold Berry of Huntington, Ind., and Charles Berry, also of
Huntington, Ind.; four sisters, Waneta SLAGLE of Andrews,
Ind., Emma TAYLOR of Phoenix, Arizona, Mrs. Vaughn (Iris)
WHITESELL of Huntington, Ind., and Martha HARTWIG, also of
Huntington, Ind. She was preceded in death by two sons,
Lowell K. Franks and Larry Franks, as well as three sisters,
Florence HARRIS, Phyllis Berry and Elizabeth Berry. Mrs.
Green was a retired bartender at the former Stardust Night
Club near Wapakoneta and she also groomed race horses at
tracks all across the United States. She was a member of
Wayne Street United Methodist Church. Funeral services will
be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998 at Long &
Folk Funeral Home in St.Marys with the Rev. David L. Woodyard
and the Rev. Marion L. Hanover officiating. Burial will
follow at Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys. Friends may call
from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday Dec. 15, 1998 at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung
Association.

Obituary / Additional Information: Eva M. Abbott, 91,
formerly of 22 1.2 E. Auglaize St., Wapakoneta, died at 9:45
a.m.Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998 at Auglaize Acres. She was born
Nov. 14, 1907 in Jackson Center to Lloyd and Caroline
(Accuntius) Maxson. On Aug. 9, 1938, she married Lawrence
"Bud" Abbot, who died Jan. 3, 1966. Survivors
include several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death
by two brothers, Stanley W. Maxson and W.R. Maxson. Mrs.
Abbott, along with her husband, had owned and operated the
former Abbott Shoe Store in Wapakoneta. She was a graduate of
Blume High School. Private family services were held today
with burial at Greenlawn Cemetery in Wapakoneta. Memorials
may be directed to the Auglaize Acres Activity Fund or to the
Donor's choice.

Additional Information: William V. "Hafe" Lietz,
74, of 410 E. Pearl St., Wapakoneta, died at 4:41 a.m.
Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998 at his residence. He had been ill
with cancer for the past six months. He was born Feb. 8, 1924
in St. Marys to Dewey and Goldie (Hole) Leitz. On Aug. 19,
1948, he married Rita C. Kreitzer, who died April 27, 1992.
Survivors include two sons and two daughters-in-law, Jerry R.
and Wanda Lietz of Wolcott, Ind., and James W. and Brigitte
Lietz of Wapakoneta; one daughter and one son-in-law, Julie
and Roger SHELLENBARGER of Wapakoneta; six grandchildren; one
sister, Mrs. Nellie MONTGOMERY of Wapakoneta; one brother and
one sister-in-law, Robert and Betty Lietz, also of
Wapakoneta; and his mother, Mrs. Goldie Lietz WALDO of
Auglaize Acres, Wapakoneta. A 1942 graduate of Blume High
School, Mr. Lietz attended Ohio State University and was a
retired brick mason, emmployed by H.U. Tuttle Construction in
Lima. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in
Wapakoneta. He was the past president of Brick Masons Union,
Lima; a member of BPO Elks Lodge 1170, VFW Post 8445,
American Legion Post 330, and a life member of AmVets Chapter
333, all in Wapakoneta; he served in the U.S. Navy in the
Pacific Theatre during World War II; he was a former trustee
for Joint Township District Memorial Hospital Foundation; a
member of the USS Kidd Assn., and past secretary-treasurer of
USS Luce Assn.; he served in Wapakoneta as Councilman-at-
Large for eight years, was president of Council for 12 years
and Mayor of Wapakoneta for 12 years; he was the former
chairman of the Auglaize County Republican Central Committee
and worked on the campaign staff for Gov. George Voinovich.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on
Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998 at St. Joseph Cemetery in Wapakoneta
with the Rev. Jozsef L. Farkasdi officiating. Military rites
will conducted at the cemetery by VFW Post 8445. Friends may
call from 10--11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998 at Long &
Folk Funeral Home in Wapakoneta. A prayer service will be
held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial
contributions may be made to the Mercer-Darke County Hospice.

St. Marys-Daniel Joseph Fortman, 17, 01889 Feeder Road, was
pronounced dead at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, by
Auglaize County Coroner Dr. Thomas Freytag, following a one-
car accident on State Route 364 near his home. He was born
Sept 9, 1981 in St. Marys to Edward and Sandra Poppe Fortman.
His parents survive at the residence. He is also survived by
two sisters; Amy (Marvin) THOMPSON of Cincinnati and Melissa
Fortman of St. Marys; maternal grandmother MaryLee Poppe of
New Knoxville; maternal step-grandfather Carl BOWERSOCK of
Fort Loramie; maternal great-grandmother, Esther ALLEN of
Lima; paternal grandfather Paul Fortman of St. Marys; one
niece Carolyn Thompson; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother Florence
Fortman; his maternal grandfather, Roland Poppe and his
maternal step-grandmother Betty Bowersock. Daniel was a
senior at Memorial High School and had been a student at the
Tri Star Educational Compact during his junior year. He was a
member of St. Marys Young Life and a member of Pheasants
Forever. He was employed by Four Star Dairy in Yorkshire and
previously at Rustic Haven Lucky Steer and Burger King. He
was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of Holy
Rosary Catholic Church. Funeral services will be held
Saturday at 11 a.m. at the church with the Rev. David A.
Heinl officiating. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Miller Funeral
Home where a prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. Memorials
may be directed to St. Marys Young Life.

Additional Information: Lester J. Peltier, 80, 271 N. Lincoln
St., Minster , died at 11 :45 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at
his home following a sudden illness. He was born June 27,
1920, in Russia, Ohio, the son of Raymond and Zelma (Paulus)
Peltier. On June 10, 1947, he married Rogene Kalhoff, who
died April 27, 1988. Survivors include a son, Dr. Michael
(Marlene) Peltier of Sidney; a daughter, Vicki (James)
GRILLIOT of Houston; a special friend, Wilma BROTHERWOOD of
St. Marys; a brother, Robert (Delores) Peltier of Russia;
five sisters, Marie (George) RATERMAN of Sidney, Wilma
SCHLATER of Russia, Virginia (Alvin) ROSENGARTEN and Norma
SCHLATER, both of Fort Loramie, and Ruth (Robert) MILLARD of
Cincinnati; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by a brother, Leroy Peltier and a granddaughter. Mr. Peltier
was co-owner and operator with his brother, Robert, of the
Peltier Garage in Russia. He was a World War II veteran of
the U.S. Army serving in the African and European theatres.
He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Minster
and of the Knights of Columbus and F.O.E. 1391, both in
Minster. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m.
Saturday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will follow

Carl R. Rickman, 86, 224 Southway Drive, St. Marys, died at
8:20 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at Joint Township District
Memorial Hospital in St. Marys. He was born July 3, 1914, in
St. Marys, the Son of Uriah and Ora (Bass) Rickman. Survivors
include a daughter, Thelma (Arthur) RUCKER of Kalamazoo,
Mich., and a brother, Woodrow Rickman of St. Marys. He was
preceded in death by his close companion, Leota BRINCEFIELD;
four sisters, Ina SEENEY, Mary BOWLES, Ida Bell Rickman and
Eva COTTMAN; and a brother, Uriah Rickman. Mr. Rickman was
retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in St. Marys. A
1932 graduate of Memorial High School in St. Marys, he was
the leader of a dance band, "The 50-50 Club" for
many years, playing many nightclubs in this area. Private
family services will be held at a later date. Miller Funeral
Home in St. Marys is in charge of the arrangements.

New Bremen, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at 10:25 a.m. at the
Valley Nursing Home in St. Marys. She was born Feb. 11,
1915, in Kossuth, the daughter of Harry and Edna (McPheron)
Binkley. On Aug. 14, 1940, she married Donald Fark, who died
July 5, 1999. Survivors include three sisters-in-law, Eileen
Binkley of Wapakoneta, Cleora FORWERCK of New Bremen and
Charleen (Robert) HUNTER of St. Marys; and a brother-in-law,
Lewis SPECKMAN of Wapakoneta. She was preceded in death by
two sisters, Opal SPECKMAN and Albertine SCHAMP, and a
brother, Merlin Binkley. A homemaker, Mrs. Fark was an active
member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ in New Bremen.
She was an avid quilter and enjoyed fishing. Funeral services
will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Gilberg Funeral Home in
New Bremen with the Rev. Steven Wills officiating. Burial
will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery in New Bremen.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

(Edwards) Simpson. On Sept. 25, 1949, she married Thomas John
Taylor, who died Oct. 17, 1996. Survivors include a son,
Thomas Taylor II of St. Marys; a daughter, Janie (Jim) PARKER
of Hazel Green, Ala.; and five grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by a brother, Edgar Simpson. A homemaker,
Mrs. Taylor was a graduate of West High School in Columbus.
She was a member of the Wayne Street United Methodist Church
in St. Marys and a member of Hawthorne Chapter, Order of
Eastern Star 119, in St. Marys where she was a Past Worthy
Matron. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the

Geneva D. Paglow, 79, formerly of Maier-Barber Road, St.
Marys, died at 12:15 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at Roselawn
Manor Nursing Home in Spencerville, where she had resided
since 1980. She was born May 24, 1921, in Auglaize County,
the daughter of Henry F. and Mary Jane (Williams) Paglow.
Survivors include a sister, Myrtle TRUESDALE of Delphos, and
eight nieces and nephews. She was prededed in death by two
brothers, Earl and Pearl Paglow. A homemaker, Ms. Paglow was
a member of Zion Lutheran Church in St. Marys. Funeral
services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Long & Folk

Obituary / Additional Information: Roger W. Helmlinger,
79, Wapakoneta, died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at
his home. He was born Jan. 22, 1921, in Clay Township,
Auglaize County, the son of Gust and Barbara (Klopfenstein)
Helmlinger. On Aug. 22, 1959, he married Clea Anna Shipman,
who survives. Other survivors include three sisters, Ethel
(Roger) ELSASS, Bernice RUCK, and Velma (Ivan) ZWIEBEL, all
of Wapakoneta; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr.
Helmlinger retired in 1989 after 44 years as a teacher with
The Ohio School of the Blind in Columbus. He was also a piano
technician and a musician. He was a member of the St. Mark's
Lutheran Church in Clay Township, Auglaize County. He was a
graduate of The Ohio School of the Blind and the Ohio State
University. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the
St. Mark's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert E. Miller
officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mark's Lutheran
Church Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Thursday at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in
Wapakoneta. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the

59, Autumn, Lane, Wapakoneta, died at 8:20 p.m. Sunday, Dec.
31, 2000, at her home. She was born Aug. 24, 1941, in
Portland, Ind., the daughter of Carl and Laura (Aker)
Newland. Her mother, Laura LYKINS, survives in Wapakoneta.
Her first husband, Donald Bays, preceded her in death. Later
she married Albert Cramer Sr., who also died. She then
married Aaron Sparks, who also died. Survivors include five

Grace M. Warnock, 81, formerly of 111 S. Garfield St.,
Minster, died at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Heritage
Manor Nursing Home at Minster after residing there for a
year-and-a-half. She was born Jan. 13, 1919, at Minster to
Harry and Florence E. (Thobe) Woehrmeyer. On Oct. 25, 1940,
she married Howard B. Warnock, who died June 22, 1980.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Kathryn
Warnock of Minster and Marsha and John OLDIGES of St. Marys;
a sister, Violet VANDERHORST of Mount Vernon; as well as
three grandsons, David, Mark and Jason Oldiges, plus two
great-grandchildren. Mrs. Warnock was a homemaker and member
of St. Augustine Catholic Church at Minster and the Minster
Guild. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m.
Tuesday at the church with the Rev. William Hoyng
officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 3 to 7 pm. Monday and from 9 to
9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hogenkamp Funeral Home at Minster.

Wayne ,Ind., formerly of St. Marys, died Monday, Dec. 25,
2000, at his home. He was born Sept. 13, 1932, in St. Marys,
the son of William Henry and Vera Fay (Cottrell) Stoker. On
Sept. 21, 1956, he married JoAnn Alday, who survives. Other
survivors include a son, Richard E. Stoker of Huntertown,
Ind.; two daughters, Barbara A. CLIFTON and Linda S. ARTHUR,
both of Fort Wayne; two brothers, Carol W. Stoker of Fort
Wayne and Benny L. Stoker of St. Marys; a sisters Vera Irene
STAHEY of Loughman, Fla.; four grandchildren and five great-
grandchildren. Mr. Stoker was a truck driver with Don R.
Fruchey in Fort Wayne for 35 years, retiring in 1995. He was

Kermit L. McCullough, Jr., 67, State Route 219, New
Knoxville, died Saturday , Dec. 23, 2000, at Wapakoneta
Manor. He was born Feb. 2, 1933, in Salem Township, Auglaize
County, the son of Kermit L. McCullough Sr. and Arvilla
(Morris) McCullough. On May 21, 1955, he married Carol Lunz,
who survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Julie
McCullough of New Knoxville; four sons, Richard (Rose)

Superintendent and trustee for many years. Funeral services

Additional Information: Michael A. Heckman, 42, 09763 State
Route 219, New Knoxville, died in the collapse of an
abandoned barn at approximately 10:50 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6,
2001, near Celina. Mr. Heckman was helping disassemble the
barn for lumber. He was born May 20, 1958, in Lima, the son
of James and Shirley (Hanby) Heckman. His mother survives in
Wapakoneta. On May 22, 1982, he married Angela Miller, who
survives. Other survivors include 11 children, Adam, Micah,
Bethany, Kerri, Jessica, Joseph, Kimberly, Andrew, Elliot,
Lindsay and Jillian Heckman all of the home; six sisters,

Spring St., St. Marys, died at 4:08 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8,
2001, at Valley Nursing Home in St. Marys following an
extended illness. He was born Nov. 15, 1925, in Cecil, the
son of Harold T. and Eva P. (Shook) Fleagle. On Feb. 28,
1953, he married Vera Ann Rudgal, who survives. Other
survivors include five sons, Michael (Arlene) Fleagle of
Bolingbrook, Ill., Tim (Tillie) Fleagle, Dr. Jeffrey
(Marscia) Fleagle and Todd (Kathy) Fleagle, all of St. Marys
and Thomas (Theresa) Fleagle of Dayton; a brother; Dr. LaMar
(Norene) Fleagle of St. Marys; a sister, Janet (Al) COLLINS
of Sterling Heights, Mich.; two sisters-in-law, Kay Fleagle

grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded
in death by two brothers, Dr. Dean Fleagle and Donald Fleagle
, and a grandson, Daniel Fleagle. Dr. Fleagle was a retired
dentist with 45 years service in St. Marys (1952-1997). He
practiced general dentistry with his brother, Dr. LaMar D.
Fleagle and was joined in 1981 by his son, Dr. Jeffrey D.
Fleagle. He attended Bowling Green State University and
graduated from Loyola University School of Dentistry in
Chicago. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy on
Board LST 816 in Pacific Theater as Chief Petty Officer. He
was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in St.
Marys. He served as past president of the St. Marys Kiwanis
Club and was also a member of the St. Marys Outing Club
(Idlewild), the St. Marys Rider Rooters and the American
Dental Association. He was a founding member of the Auglize
Mercer YMCA. He especially enjoyed gardening, traveling
during his retirement, St.Marys Roughriders and Ohio State
Buckeyes football and the company of his grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's
United Church of Christ with The Rev. Patricia G. Minnick,
the Rev. John C. Wine and the Rev. Keith D. Stuck
officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery in St.

Additional Information: Donald E. Wright, 70, 1770 Celina
Road, St. Marys, died at 5:50 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at
his home following an extended illness. He was born Aug. 7,
1930, in Auglaize County, the son of Donald and Opal (Henne)
Wright. On Aug. 7, 1951, he married Maxine Line, who
survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Diane (Doug)
BONIFAS of Celina and Pam (Ted) FOX of St. Marys; two sons,
David (Jodi) Wright and Anthony Wright, both of St. Marys; a
sister, Dorothy (Barry) SILVER of St. Marys; and 12
grandchildren. Mr. Wright was retired from the Hayes-Albion
Corp. in Spencerville, where he had worked for 43 years, and
had been actively involved in the management of the Innlet
Restaurant in St. Marys for many years. He was owner of
Gator's Lawn Service in St. Marys and was currently assisting
in the operation of Dave's Celina Road Barbecue in St. Marys.
He was a 1948 graduate of Memorial High school in St. Marys,
where he had played baseball and football. He was a veteran
of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the St. Paul's
United Church of Christ in St. Marys. He was also a member of
Hayes-Albion Retirees Group and the Spencerville Post of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars. He formerly coached Little League
baseball for many years in St. Marys, including the Little
League All-Star Team. He loved St. Marys Roughrider football
and was a founding member of the St. Marys Rider Rooters. He
greatly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Funeral
services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the St. Paul's United
Church of Christ with the Rev. Patricia Minnick and the Rev.
James Byrne officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove
Cemetery in St. Marys, where the Spencerville VFW will

Water St., died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 at 3:30 a.m. at Joint
Township Memorial Hospital, St. Marys. He was born Oct. 15,
1904, near New Bremen, in German Township, Auglaize County,
the son o Christian and Emma (Fricke) Sollman. On July 26,
1941, he married Leola M. Teeters, who died May 14, 1978. He
then married Elodie M. Lanfersieck, who survives in New
Bremen. Other survivers include a niece and nephew, Betty and
Tom HEVLIN of St. Marys. He was the last of his family,
proceded in death by a brother. Mr. Sollman was a lifetime
farmer, still owning the Centennial Farm which his family has
owned since 1849. He also clerked auctions for years. He was
a lifetime member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in
New Bremen. He was a charter member of the New Bremen Senior
Citizens and the Auglaize County Farm Bureau. He was a
member of the Woodman of the World Lodge 149 of New Bremen,

Huffman, 88 of New Haven, Indiana died at 10:20 a.m.
Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998 at her residence. She was born March
18, 1909 in St. Marys to Herman H. and Amerlia M. (Luft)
Schroer. On Sept. 7, 1940 she married C. Everett Huffman, and
he died in 1997. She is survived by a daughter, Kay I. PUTT
of New Haven; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Huffman retired in 1971 as head teller at Home Loan Bank
where she was employed for 31 years. She was a member of
Calvary United Methodist Church, past president of the United
Methodist Women and past president of Northern Indiana
Conference of United Methodist Woman. Services will be held
at 3 p.m. Monday at D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral home, 1140
Lake Avenue, Fort Wayne, Indiana with Rev. Karen Kosberg
officiating. Burial will follow in Covington Memorial Gardens
in Fort Wayne. Memorials maybe directed to the Parkview Home

Court St., Wapakoneta, died at 1:05 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11,
1999 at Parkview Hospital in Ft. Wayne from injuries
sustained in an auto accident in Northern Indiana early
Sunday morning. She was born Sept 4, 1975 inLima to Edward
E. and Kathleen M. (Fuerst) Burden, who survives in Botkins.
On Oct. 26, 1996, she married Shane David Shoup, who
survives. Other survivors include a son, Alexander M. Shoup
at home; her mother-in-law, Sharon M. Shoup of Wapakoneta;
two brothers; Edward T. Burden II, and his fiance Tammy
GRISEZ of Minster, and Daniel M. Burden of Botkins, a sister-
in-law, Staci Shoup of Wapakoneta; and her grandparents,
Maurice and Florence Fuerst of New Hampshire, and Richard and
Virginia Burden of Botkins. She was preceded in death by her
father-in-law, David G. Shoup. Mrs. Shoup was a 1993 graduate
of Botkins High school and a 1997 graduate of Bluffton
College. She was the Music Director for New Knoxville Schools
and was a former Music Teacher for St. Charles Elementary
School in Lima. She was a member of Immaculate Conception
Church in Botkins and was the Youth Choir Director and Cantor
at the church. She was a member of the oOhio Music Education
Association. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30
a.m. Friday, Jan. 15, 1999 at the Immaculate Conception
Church in Botkins with the Rev. James F. Trick officiating.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Wapakoneta.

Aufderhaar, 91, formerly of 100 Hoge St., New Knoxville, died
at 11:40 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, 1998 at Otterbein St. Marys,
where she had been a resident since 1994. She was born Nov.
21, 1907 near Spencerville to George and Fredericka (Claus)
Henne. On Aug. 10, 1935, she married Noah Aufderhaar, who
died 1994. She is survived by one daughter and one son-in-
law, Annett and Lloyd KUCK of New Knoxville; one grandson,
Dr. Douglas Kuck of North Augusta, South Carolina; and one
great-granddaughter, Renae Kuck and her fiance, Tony GREGG of
Bowling Green, Ohio; and a number of nieces and nephews. She
was preceded in death by one sister, Elma PIPER, and by three
brothers, Carl, William and Arthur Henne. A 1925 graduate of
St. Marys Memorial High School and Bowling Green Normal
School, Mrs. Aufderhaar was an elementary teacher in several
area rural schools including the St. Marys City Schools and
New Knoxville Local School. She was a life insurance
saleswoman for the William Hecht and later the Robert L.
Hecht Insurance Agencies for nearly 50 years. She was a
member of the United Methodist Church in New Knoxville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 24,
1998 at the Vornholt-Miller Funeral Home in New Knoxville
with the Rev. Mitch Arnold and the Rev. Ruth Ramsey
officiating. Friends may call from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on
Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998 at the Vornholt-Miller Funeral

Jett, 91, Pusheta Road, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at 6:15
a.m. at her residence. She was born March 30, 1907 in
Washington Township to Benjamin O. and Anna Lageman
Raberding. In 1935 she married Clifford R. Jett and he died
in 1969. She is survived by two daughters: Ann and Anthony
WILLIAMS of Westminster, CA and Mary and Donald ROHRBAUGH of
Wapakoneta; four grandchildren; Melissa SCHNEIDER of
Wapakoneta, Michael D. Williams, Laguna Niguel, CA, Matthew
Williams of Oakland, CA and Michelle Williams of Huntington
Beach CA; her caregiver, Marilyn JAMES. She was preceded in
death by twin children and three brothers; Cleo Raberding,
Oscar Raberding, and Edgar Raberding. After attending school
in New Knoxville and Wapakoneta, she graduated from Blume
High School in 1925. She attended Bowling Green State
University and graduated from Ohio Northern University in
1933. She began teaching in the one-room Burden School and
Uniopolis School, both in Auglaize County. Later, she taught
first grade at Cridersville and then Centennial Elementary in
Wapakoneta from which she retired after 27 years of teaching.
Mrs. Jett, a lifelong resident of Auglaize county was an 81
years member of the First United Methodist Church in
Wapakoneta and a member of its United Methodist Women and the
Susanna Unit. She was a member of the Auglaize County Retired
Teachers Association, the Wapakoneta Women's Club and the
American Legion Auxiliary. In 1997 she was honored by then
Secretary of State Bob Taft for a perfect 50 years voting
record. Her first ballot was cast in 1928, seven years after
women gained the right to vote. Recently Mrs. Jett was
honored as a continuous owner-descendent of the founder of
the Raberding farm near New Knoxville where she was born. Her
great-grandparents received a land grant from the government
in the early 1940s. Funeral services will be held Wednesday
at 2:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church.

Amanda (Prueter) Gilmore. On Nov. 28, 1935 she married Elton
Bruns who survives at Dorothy Love. Other survivors are a son

Indiana; and two grandsons. She was preceded in death by
three brothers, Alvin, Elmer and Wilson Gilmore and a sister,
Marjorie ROBERTSON. Mrs. Bruns, a homemaker, was a member of

Additional Information: Elton William Bruns, 90, formerly of
New Bremen, died at 4:25 a.m. EST. Tuesday, May 19, 1998 at
the Living Petals of Middletown, Indiana. He was born Aug.
18, 1907 in New Bremen, the son of Fernando and Anna
(Weinberg) Bruns. On Nov. 28, 1935 he married the former
Daisy Gilmore, who died Feb. 27, 1997. He is survived by a
son and daughter-in-law, William and Juanita Bruns, Muncie,
Indiana; two grandsons, Edward Bruns, Surry, Maine, and
Daniel Bruns of Indianapolis, Indiana. He was preceded in
death by his parents, and two sisters Frances BISHOP and
Erline ENGLAND. Mr. Bruns was a member of St. Paul United
Church of Christ in New Bremen, and graduated from New
Bremen High School in 1925. He started work in the machine
shop of STAMCO in New Bremen and studied mechanical drafting.
He undertook further Engineering Design study at North Side
Tool Company in Dayton, and Mackintosh Hemphill in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1936 he returned to STAMCO as
Assistant Chief Engineer and later as Chief engineer. In 1972
he retired as Director of Engineering and Research. He held a
membership in Iron and Steel Engineers and was a member of
the Monarch-STAMCO Twenty-five Year Club. He served as a four
termmember of the New Bremen Board of Public Affairs, with
one term as president. He served as a four team member of the
New Bremen Village Council with one term as president. He
helped organize and was first president of the New Bremen Rod
and Gun Club. He is a former member of the Executive
committee of the Auglaize County Republican Party, a former
member of the New Bremen Lions Club, and a member of the
Wapakoneta and Mercer County Elks Club. Funeral services will
be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's United Church of
Christ in New Bremen with the Rev. Jeffrey R. Gerber
officiating. Emtombment will be at the German Protestant
Cemetery, New Bremen. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m.

"Betty" Pitthan, 91, Wapakoneta, died at 1:50 p.m.
Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Auglaize Acres in Wapakoneta. She
was born Feb. 16, 1909, in Oakmont, Pa., the daughter of
Louis L. and Laura (Shrom) Banks. On June 19, 1937, she
married Frederick J. Pitthan, who died Sept. 17, 1980.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Jane (John) KELLER of
Wapakoneta; a son, Frederick J. (Dee) Pitthan Jr. of
Rockford, Ill.; five grandchildren, Beth (Ross) KANTNER,
Susan (Craig) NIEMEYER, Paul Keller, Robert Pitthan and
Douglas Pitthan; and four great-grandchildren, Ryan Kantner,
Kaitlin Kantner, Jacob Pitthan and Jeremy Pitthan. She was
preceded in death by a brother, Louis L. Banks Jr., and a
sister Loise SHOE. A homemaker, Mrs. Pitthan was co-owner of
the former Sundial Motel in Wapakoneta. She was a former
member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Wapakoneta
and a volunteer with the Lima Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
She was a member of the Soproptimist International, the
Wapakoneta Woman's Club, the Helen Hunt Club and the Visiting
Nurses Association all of Wapakoneta. She was a former
president of the Wapakoneta PTA and a member of the Daughters
of the American Revolution, Lima Chapter. A memorial service
will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral
Home in Wapakoneta with Dr. Daniel Messner of Shawnee
Alliance Church officiating. Burial of the cremated remains
will follow at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Wapakoneta. Friends

Additional Information: New Bremen, June 13-Charles Fred
Weinberg, 71, Vine Street, was found dead Saturday afternoon
in a barn on the Weinberg premises. He had hanged himself.
Mr. Weinberg had not been seen since Wednesday and it is
believed that he had been dead for about two days. He was
born Feb. 1, 1884, in New Bremen, the son of the late Henry
and Wilhelmina Schwaberow Weinberg. He made his home with his
sister, Miss Malinda Weinberg, who is left to mourn his death
along with a brother, William Weinberg and another sister,
Mrs. Anna BRUNS, both of New Bremen. He was employed as a
laborer. Mr. Weinberg had been confirmed in St. Paul's
Evangelical and Reformed church. Funeral services will be
held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Vornholt Funeral Home with the
Rev. Elmer F. Johnson officiating. Burial will take place in
German Protestant cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral

Melinda Ida Weinberg, 76, died last evening at 11:45 at the
St. Marys Nursing Home where she had been a patient since
August. Death was attributed to complications following a
four year illness. A lifelong resident of New Bremen, she was
born March 28, 1879, and was the daughter of the late Henry
and Wilhelmina Schwaberow Weinberg. Surviving are a brother,
William Weinberg of New Bremen, and a sister, Mrs. Anna BRUNS
of New Bremen. A sister, Cora and a brother, Charles
preceeded her in death, the latter June 11, 1953. She was a
member of the Christian Alliance Church. Funeral services

the second time in four months death entered the home of the
Henry Weinberg family. The mother, Mrs. Wilhelmina
(Schwaberow) Weinberg passed away Dec. 23rd (1928) and
yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock the father Henry Weinberg
was called from the home. Mr. Weinberg had been ailing for
many years having been afflicted with asthma, Bright's
Disease and heart trouble. During the past several weeks, Mr.
Weinberg's condition became more serious and the greater part
of the time was compelled to sit in a chair on account of the
dropsical condition. With the kind assistance of his
daughters, Linda and Cora who were in the home with him, he
was given the best of care. Mr. Weinberg was born in Jackson
county. The greater part of his life was spent and lived here
in New Bremen. For many years he was employed at the
Lanfersieck-Grothaus Plow Works. In his early years here in
New Bremen, he was one of the organizers of the so-called
"Little Six" band in which he played for 17 years,
the only surviving member of this band being John LAUT. For
about 15 years, Mr. Weinberg served as City marshall and for
many years was fire chief. The past 14 years, he retired from
work. At the time of his death he was 74 years, 9 months and
18 days of age. Funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2
o'clock with services conducted in the home by Rev. J. C.
Melchert. Interment in the German Protestant Cemetery.
Friends may view the remains Saturday evening from 7 to 9
o'clock. The deceased is survived by the following children:
William and Charles Weinberg and three daughters, Mrs. F.W.
BRUNS, Miss Linda Weinberg and Miss Cora Weinberg, the latter
two at home. One brother, William Weinberg, Sr. and one
sister, Mrs. Louise TSCHUDIN, nine grandchildren and three

William Weinberg, 89, of 209 South Walnut Street, died of
complications following a stroke at 3:05 p.m. Wednesday in
Joint Township hospital. He had been hospitalized for two
weeks. Mr. Weinberg, a retired miller, was born in Upper
Sandusky on April 7, 1876, and was the last surviving member
of the family of Henry and Wilhlemina Schwaberow Weinberg. He
was preceded in death by three sisters, and one brother. He
married Emma Schaefer on August 11, 1898. She died in 1952.
He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Paul (Grace) DINE of
Minster, Mrs. Harold (Irene) BROWN of Dayton, Mrs. Robert
(Ruby) HILL of Tipp City, and Mrs. Robert (Betty) KETTLER of
New Bremen; one son, Pearly Weinberg of New Bremen; four
grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A son, Howard and
a daughter, Loverta, are deceased. He was a member of the St.
Paul's United Church of Christ, New Bremen. Funeral services

Information: St. Marys- Shirley D. Rieger Hudson, 49, of
here, died at 12;25 a.m. Sunday at Joint Township District
Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. She was born
Sept. 11, 1940, in St. Marys, the daughter of Paul E. and
Violet Williams Rieger. Her mother survives in St. Marys.
Mrs. Hudson had formerly worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber
Co., West Ohio Gas Co., and was associated with the former
Slim's Place. She graduated in 1958 from Memorial High School
Survivors also include two daughters, Mrs. Roger (Joann)
SILER of Rapid City, S.D., and Mrs. Ralph (Liberty) PICKERING
Jr. of St. Marys; a granddaughter; two sisters, Roxy VOGAN of

1111 Woodland Drive, Versailles, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001,
at noon at Versailles Health Center in Versailles. He was
born Dec. 17, 1918, in Auglaize county, the son of Clarence
L. and Karah (Grear) Johns. On Feb. 18, 1945, he married
Zemabelle "Zemie" Johns, who died in 1996.
Survivors include two sons, D. Michael (Shirley) Johns and
Terry Johns, both of Versailles, two daughters, Susette
(Larry) KRUCKEBURG of Versilles and Jeanette (Joe) BEY of
Fort Recovery; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nel and
Ted FRANKLIN of Fort Recovery; six grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a
brother, Dick Johns. Mr. Johns was owner of Johns IGA grocery
store in Versailles from 1967 to 1981, when he retired. He
was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army,
Infantry 37th Division. He was a member of Versailles United
Methodist Church, the Eagles lodge in St. Marys, the Masonic
lodge in St. Marys and the Versailles Lions Club. Funeral
services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bailey Zechar Funeral

Additional Information: Dorothy Boesel, 89, formerly of
Wapakoneta and Lima, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in
Annapolis, Md., where she had resided the past five years.
She was born March 12, 1911, in Dayton, the daughter of
Robert and Florence Delscamp. On Dec. 29, 1934, she married
Paul O. Boesel, former prosecuting attorney for Auglaize
County and a partner in a Lima law firm, who died Oct. 9,
1971. Survivors include a son, David Boesel of Annapolis,
Md.,; a daughter, Judy KELLY of Greenwich, Conn.; five
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by a brother, William BOMHARD. Mrs. Boesel was a
member of First English Lutheran Church in Wapakoneta. While
living in Lima, she was a member of the Market Street
Presbyterian Church, a member of its board of directors and
was active in decorating the church at its current location.
She was also a member of the Shawnee Country Club in Lima. A
graduate of Steele High School in Dayton, she attended
Northwestern University, where she majored in drama and was a
member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. A graveside service will
be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Greenlawn Cemetery in Wapakoneta
with the Rev. Richard Sheffield officiating. There will be no
local visitation. A reception for family and friends will be
held after the service. A memorial service will be held at a
later date at Market Street Presbyterian Church. Memorials
may be directed to the Society for the Progressive
Supranuclear Palsy Inc., c/o Johns Hopkins Hospital,

Hospital in St. Marys following an apparent stroke. She was

Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Heritage Manor Nursing Center in
Minster following a lengthy illness. He was born Jan. 22,
1918, in Fort Loramie, the son of Herman and Josephine
(Schmidt) Ahms. On April 18, 1950, he married Mary P. Keller,
who died in 1984. Survivors include a daughter, Esther (Joe)
HEITKAMP of Fort Recovery; four sons, Leo (Rita) Ahms, Vernon

died at 1:20 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at The Pavilion in
Sidney. She was born Oct. 19, 1914, in Clay Township,
Auglaize County, the daughter of Adam G. and Armeda (Rash)
Helmlinger. On Jan. 16, 1936, she married Raymond E. Elsass,
who died Aug. 17, 1987. Survivors include a daughter, Yvonne
(Max) SMITH of DeGraff; a son, Daniel (Pamela) Elsass of
Charlotte, N.C.; two grandsons, Kenneth (Rebecca) Elsass of
Gaithersburg, Md., and Jarrod (Gretchen) Elsass of Franklin,
Va.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death
by five brothers and five sisters. A homemaker, Mrs. Elsass
worked with her husband on the family farm. She was a 63 year
member of St. Jacob Lutheran Church in Shelby County and its
Church Women United. She was a Sunday School teacher for more
than 40 years and served as stewardship chairperson for more
than 20 years. In 1948, she started the Junior Mission Band,
now known as the Junior Lutherans, and chaired many programs
and projects. She was a member and treasurer of the Botkins
Senior Citizens and a member of the Sidney Senior Citizens.

Jacob Lutheran Church with the Rev. Milo A. Strozensky

Edith W. Geiger, 81, 133 N. Wayne St., St. Marys, died at
1:15 a.m. Thursday in Valley Nursing Home after a lengthy
illness. She was born in St. Marys on May 25, 1901, to John
F. and Caroline Elizabeth (Settlage) Geiger. Survivors
include three sisters, Mrs. B.H. (Alma) LUTTERBEIN, Edgerton;
Miss Marguerite M. Geiger, with whom she made her home; and
Mrs. T.C. (Clara) DEWEESE, Fort Wayne, Ind. Two sisters,
Cathryn C. Geiger (Former editor of the St. Marys Evening
Leader for many years), and Gertrude F. Geiger, preceded her
in death. Miss Geiger was a retired elementary teacher for 25
years at Springfield City Schools and later at St. Marys
Public Schools until her retirement in 1971. She graduated
from St. Marys Public Schools, attended Miami University of
Ohio and graduated from Wittenberg University. She attended
Zion Lutheran Church, St. Marys. She was a member of Auglaize
County Retired Teachers Association, Ohio Retired Teachers
Association, National Retired Teachers Association. Progress
Club, St. Marys, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Zion Lutheran
Church Women, and was formerly of Springfield Ladies Chorus.
