Information: Dwight Smith, 87, 04894 Aqueduct Road, St.
Marys, died at 7:28 a.m. Nov. 8 at Joint Township District
Memorial Hospital in St. Marys following an extended illness.
He was born March 21, 1914, in Waynesfield to John and Nellie
(Croy) Smith. On Sept. 26, 1950, he married Marie Apple, who
died Oct. 7, 1997.
Survivors are a daughter, Regina ROEDER, Lima; a daughter and
her husband, Brenda and Craig MCDERMITT, St. Marys; a son and
his wife, Bud and Laura, Waynesfield; four brothers and their
wives, Bernard and Norma of Lima, Roger and Geneva of Elida,
John and Bonnie of Battle Creek, Mich., and Morris and Jan of
Marshall, Mich.; two sisters and their husbands, Lois and
Merle LEEDY, Lima, and JoAnn and Maurice DUGGAN, Waynesfield;
13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-
great-grandchildren.
Deceased are three brothers, Mick, Carl and Ralph; a sister,
Betty, and a granddaughter, Priscilla McDermitt.
He was a 1932 graduate of New Hampshire High School and
graduated from business college in Cleveland. He retired in
1975 from his post as administrator of the Auglaize County
Home and previously had served as the superintendent of the
former Lima State Hospital. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of
World War II and a member of Veterans of Foreign War Post
9289 and Eagles Aerie 767, both in St. Marys. He was a member
of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Marys.
Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home Grand
Lake St. Marys Chapel, the Rev. David Heinl officiating.
Burial is at Gethsemane Cemetery in St. Marys. The VFW will
conduct graveside military rites.
Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The
VFW will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m.
Contributions can be made to a charity of the donor's
choice.

Ave., St. Marys, died at 6:20 p.m. Dec. 12 at Joint Township
District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.
He was born Aug. 5, 1919, in Athens, to Albe and Mary
(Carpenter) Ballenger. On July 21, 1946, he married Jeanne
Cain and she survives.
Also surviving are a son and his wife, Robert and Shirley
WILLIAMS, Tampa, Fla.; two sisters and their husbands,
Lucille and Robert DENHAM, Akron, and Karen and Don ASHBY,
Severne Park, Md., and three sisters, Rena BAKER, Akron, Joan
DILORETA, Orlando, Fla., and Kate DEORIO, Lorton, Va.; a
sister-in-law, Helen RUNYON, Tallmadge; two grandchildren, a
stepgranddaughter, two great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-
grandchildren.
Deceased is a brother, Robert.
He retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. after 38 years
of service as an electrical engineer. A 1937 graduate of
North High School in Akron, he attended the Goodyear
Technical Apprenticeship Program, where he became an
electrician and master mechanic. He was a U.S. Army veteran,
serving during World War II and helping to liberate a
concentration camp.
He was a member of Wayne Street United Methodist Church, St.
Marys, where he served as Sunday School superintendent and
sang in the choir for many years. He was a member and past
president of the St. Marys Kiwanis Club, serving as
lieutenant governor of the state organization in 1985. He
also was a member of American Legion Post 323, Veterans of
Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9289 and Fraternal Order of Eagles
Aerie 767, St. Marys, Masonic Lodge 83 of Akron, Scottish
Rite Valley of Akron and Yusef Khan Grotto, Akron.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the church, the Rev.
David Woodyard officiating. Burial will be at Elm Grove
Cemetery, St. Marys, with military graveside rites by the
Legion and VFW.
Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home,
St. Marys.
Contributions can be made to the church youth program.

Wapakoneta, died Dec. 29 at her home.
She was born Oct. 5, 1925, in St. Marys to August and Nettie
Shaffer.
On Sept. 24. 1945, she married Raymond C. Vining, who died in
1976. On June 2, 1982, she married George L. Zenz, who
survives.
Other survivors include two sons and their wives, Raymond D.
and Jane of Wapakoneta, and Edward L. and Deb of St. Marys;
two daughters and their husbands, Karen and Larry WICKER, St.
Marys, and Donna and Roger SPANGLER, Junction City; a
daughter, Joan GILLEO, St. Marys; a stepson and his wife, Ron
and Carolyn of Wapakoneta; a stepdaughter, Diane of
Wapakoneta; a sister, Mary AXE, St. Marys; 12 grandchildren,
two step-grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a son, Jimmy E. ; two brothers, Orley and Fred
Shaffer; and two sisters, Goldie SLEMMONS and Loni HARRUFF.
She was a homemaker and attended Shekinah Temple, St. Marys.
Services are 11 a.m. today at Bayliff & Eley Funeral
Home, Wapakoneta, the Rev. Judy Ball officiating. Burial will
follow at Elm Grove Cemetery, St. Marys.

Defiance Street, St. Marys died at 12 a.m. July 7 (1976) at
Joint Township District Memorial Hospital. She had been a
patient there for one week. Born August 1, 1916 in New
Knoxville, she was the daughter of Herbert and Emma (Cook)
Heil. On July 19, 1935 she married Henry Burden and he
survives. Also surviving are four children, Mrs. John
(Barbara) SIMPSON, Bryan, Miss Karen Burden, Lima; Miss
Vicky Burden; St. Marys; one son Henry Scott Burden, St.
Marys, seven grandchildren; two great-grand-children, three
sisters, Mrs. Thomas (Eleanore) NELSON, Palmetto, Fla.; Mrs.
Lloyd (Louise)TESTER, Celina; and Mrs. Harold (Martha) LAUTH,
New Knoxville; four brothers; Carl (Dick) Heil, Wapakeonta;
Paul Heil, St. Marys; John Heil, St. Marys; and Herbert Heil,
Jr. Vandalia. Two children and one sister, Juanita Heil are
deceased. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in St.
Marys and the Ladies Auxiliary of the St. Marys American
Legion Post 323. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the
Yoder, Long and Folk Funeral Home, St. Marys with the Rev.
Russell Bowditch officiating. Burial will be in Elm Grove
Cemetery, St. Marys. Friends may call at the funeral home
Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The family asks that

resident, died Sunday in Manatee Memorial Hospital ,
Bradenton, Fla. He was born Jan. 14, 1914 in Dayton. Twenty-
two years ago he moved from St. Marys. Survivors include his
wife, Eleanore (Heil) Nelson; a son, James of Bradenton,
Fla.; two grandsons; one brother, Verling of St. Marys; and a
sister Bernice LONG of Indianapolis, Ind. Mr. Nelson was a
member of the First United Methodist Church in Palmetto. He
was a retired truck driver. Services will be held at 22 a.m.
Thursday in the Edward Funeral Home; Palmetto, Fla. Burial
will be at Skyway Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6-8
p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Information: Clara H. Ruwoldt, 75, 605 Cleveland Ave., St.
Marys, died 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at Joint Township District
Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Born Sept 20,
1906 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of Joseph and
Theresa (Teeters) Houser. She moved to Auglaize County 55
years ago. In 1928, she married Oliver F. Ruwoldt, who died
Dec. 4, 1953. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. William
(Betty) MONROE and Mrs. Don (Mary Alice ) MCDERMITT, both of
St.Marys and one son Leonard Ruwoldt of 320 Cole Dr.,
Wapakoneta, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Three sisters and two brothers are deceased. She was formerly
employed at Auglaize Acres and she did private duty nursing
and care for the elderly in her home. Funeral services are
set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Miller Funeral Home, St.Marys
with the Rev. K Roy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in
the Swamp College Cemetery, Celina. Friends may call Friday

Chestnut St., St. Marys, died at the Valley Nursing Home, St.
Marys at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, April 18, 1992. She was born
February 22, 1897, in New Bremen, the daughter of Charles A.
and Louise (Huenke) Heil. On June 18, 1920, she married Cade
F. Schulenberg, who died December 12, 1958. Survivors include
one daughter, Mrs. Valentin (Susan) RABE of Geneseo, N.Y.;
seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by a daughter and two sisters. A homemaker,
Mrs. Schulenberg was a member of Zion Church, New Bremen. She
was active in the quilting group of the church. She was a
former postal worker and poll worker for elections. Funeral
services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Gilberg Funeral Home,
New Bremen, with Rev. Lysle Schmidt officiating. Burial will
follow the services at German-Protestant Cemetery, New
Bremen. There will be no visitaion. Memorials may be directed

Information: April 6, 1949- One of New Bremen's well-
known and well liked citizens, Mrs. Hilda Dorothy Pape, 55,
succumbed early this morning at 2 o'clock at her home in
318 North Main Street. Mrs. Pape, who had been ill for the
past four months, died of complications. Funeral services are
arranged for Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the
Vornholt Funeral Home with the Rev. E.H. Bassler officiating.
Burial will be in the German Protestant cemetery. The
deceased was born west of New Bremen on March 30, 1894, a
daughter of Fred Dicke and Mrs. Martha Wuebbenhorst Dicke. On
August 22, 1917, she was married to Carl Pape. Survivors are
her husband; her father, who resides with a son Edwin, west
of New Bremen; four sons, Carl, Jr., David, James, at home,
and Don of Ciincinnati; a sister, Mrs. Louis (Della)
WEINBERG of Cincinnati, who was at the bedside and cared for
her sister during her illness; and two brothers, Edwin and
Herbert Dicke of New Bremen Rural Route. She was a lifetime
member of the St. Pauls Evangelical and Reformed church and
belonged to the American Legion Auxilliary. Friends may call
at Funeral Home Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday
until the final rites.

(March 28, 1929) by Rev. J. C. Melchert, pastor of St.
Paul's church , for Mrs. Catherine Schulenberg, widow of
the late Wm. Schulenberg. The service was held in the home of
a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ernst KUCK, North
Main Street, and was followed by burial in the German
Protestant cemetery. .. Death came suddenly after having been
stricken with a stroke of apoplexy . Mrs. Schulenberg, whose
maiden name was Helwig, was born in Cincinnati on August 6,
1843. Her marriage took place July 27, 1865, in New Bremen,
only a few months after Mr. Schulenberg had been given his
discharge from the Union army. With the exception of a brief
residence in Wapakoneta during the years her husband was
sheriff of Auglaize county, she resided in New Bremen from
the time of her marriage until her death. Mr. Schulenberg
died January 26, 1928...Leaves two daughters, Mrs. Ed
LANGHORST and Mrs. Kuck, New Bremen; a foster son, Frank
HUENKE, Lima; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

following an apparent heart attack. Born May 14, 1894, in New
Bremen, she was the daughter of Charles and Louise (Huenke)
Heil. On April 5, 1920, she married Orville B. Rider, who
died in 1956. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Carl
(Janie) HENDERSON of St. Marys; one grandson, George B.
Henderson of St. Marys; a great-granddaughter, Linda HARSH of
Leon, WV, two great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Norma
SCHULENBERG of St. Marys. She was preceded in death by one
sister, Helen ERHART and two great-grandchildren. A
hoomemaker, Mrs. Rider also owned and operated Rider's
Guest Motel in St. Marys. She was a emmber of the Zion
Lutheran Church, the St. Marys Senior Citizens and spent many
years as a volunteer in Joint Township District Memorial
Hospital. Mrs. Rider was a 1914 graduate of New Bremen High
school. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in
the Long and Folk Funeral home St. Marys, with Rev. Therodore
T. Stellhorn III officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Grove
Cemetery, St. Marys. Memorial contributions may be given to
the American Heart Association.

Bremen, O., Dec. 18, (1948) Edward Henry Meckstroth, 61,
died of complications at his home in Lock Two last evening at
6:15 o'clock. He had been ailing for three years and
bedfast for the past two months. Funeral services will be
conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock fom the Gilberg
& Hegemier Funeral Home with the Rev. E.H. Bassler
officiating. Burial will be in the German Protestant
cemetery. Mr. Meckstroth was a native of New Knoxville, born
on July 4, 1887. His parents were the late Ernest and Anna
Lutterbeck Meckstroth. On January 8, 1914 , he married Hilda
Kettler who is left to mourn his passing with six children,
Earl , Reuben, Norman, Mrs. John (LaRue) DICKE, all of New
Bremen, and Ralph and Roland, at home. There are six
grandchildren, a brother George Meckstroth of New Knoxville
and a sister, Mrs. Henry ZIEGLER of Dayton, also surviving.
Prior to his illness, Mr. Meckstroth was employed at the
Good year plant, St. Marys. He was member of the St. Paul
Evangelical and Reformed church

Information: April 4, 1916 -Mrs. William Roettger ....after
ailling from the effects of a broken hip sustained while
falling on the icy pavement at her home on North Herman
Street. She attained the old age of 80 years, 3 months,
and 10 day. Funeral services were conducted from the
residence Rev. Fischer, the deceased's pastor, officiated
at the last rites at St. Peters church Interment in Willow
Grove Cemetery. Anna Charlotte Wilhelmine Koch was born near
Loevern, in Minden, Germany on December 24th, 1835.
Emigrated with parents at age 10, Comfirmed in St. Pauls
church. Married July 31, 1856 to her surviving husband.
Eleven children, two sons died in infancy, four sons and five
daughters survive.....Louis of Elmwood, Neb., Edward, Wm.
and Christ reside in Mercer county; Mrs. Lucy ANSELMAN of
Celina, Mrs. August HUCKERIEDE, northeast of New Bremen; Mrs.

undertakers, were in charge Tuesday afternoon of the funeral
services for William Adolph Kuck, 58, who died suddenly
Friday at his home in New Knoxville. Burial was held in the
Pilger Ruhe cemetery near that village after services had
been conducted in the German Reformed church. Mr. Kuck was
married twice, his first wife, whose maiden name was Marie
Duhme, dying in 1909. In 1914 he married Mrs. William
EVERSMAN. Besides the widow, he leaves six children, Miss
Frieda Kuck, Lima, Mrs. Amanda BAMBAUER, Gustave Kuck, Walter
Kuck, Raymond H. Kuck and Harvey Kuck, New Knoxville; and
four stepchildren, Mrs. Roy LINK, Amos Eversman, Akron, Miss

Information: Shirley Ann Kuck, 46, of 25 N. Water St., New
Bremen, died Saturday (4-3-1982) at her residence following
an extended illness. Born July 29, 1935, in New Bremen, she
was the daughter of Harold and Alma (Butterfield) Hittepole.
Her parents survives in New Bremen. On March 22, 1958, she
married David Kuck who also survives. Other survivors include
a daughter, Teresa WOEHLER of New Bremen; a son Robert Kuck
of New Bremen; a grandmother, Mary Butterfield of R.R.1,
Anna; and two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Carol) WILSON of New
Bremen and Mrs. Gerald (Pat) DICKE of Mesa, Ariz. Mrs. Kuck
was a member of the St. Pauls United Church of Christ in New
Bremen and the New Bremen Fire Department Auxilliary. She
assist her husband in the operation of Kuck Welding by doing
office and bookkeeping work there Services will held at 2
p.m. Wednesday in the Gilberg Funeral Home New Bremen with

Christ Klosterman, 90, long-time resident of New Bremen,
have been arranged...at the Vornholt funeral home, with
burial in German Protestant cemetery.... Mr. Klosterman, who
was born March 29, 1865 in Germany died Tuesday morning after
a long illness. Emigrating to this country as a young man, he
married Miss Amelia Strasburg on March 15, 1900. She
preceded him in death nearly 20 years ago. Survivng members
of the immediate family are two daughters, Mrs. Harry Rempe,
New Bremen, and Mrs. Arthur ESCHMEYER, New Knoxville and 11
grandchildren. Two children, a son and a daughter, are
deceased. A sister lives in Germany. The funeral services
will be conducted by Rev. H. P. Baur of St. Peter's
Evangerlical and Reformed church with which Mr. Klosterman

Born Aug. 15, 1913, in Cassella to Edward and Clara
Langenkamp Reichert. In 1938, he married Luetta Kaiser who
died in 1945. In 1948, he married Julitta WEITZEL who died in
1967. In 1970, he married Wilma ROSE who died in 1973. His
fourth wife, Leatha ALEXANDER, whom he married in 1990,
survives.
Survivors include a son, Bernard of Fort Recovery; four
daughters, Marlene (Ben) HINKLE, Vandalia, Clara (Tom) LINN,
Wapakoneta, Barbara (Glenn) NICODEMUS, Portland, Ind., and
Laura (John) OLDING, Brookville; seven stepchildren, a
sister, Mary (Richard) EVERMAN, Maria Stein; a sister-in-law,
Alfreda Reichert, Maria Stein; 12 grandchildren, three great-
grandchildren and a number of stepgrandchildren and
stepgreat-grandchildren.
Deceased are a daughter, Mildred; two brothers, Ralph and

Information: St. Marys- Orville B. Rider, 62, 721 W. Jackson,
dispatch clerk at the local postoffice for the past 35 years
died suddenly at 9:45 a.m. Monday at his home. He was
released form Joint Township hospital only Saturday. A
resident of Auglaize county most of his life, he was born
Oct. 10. 1895, in Spencerville, the son of the late Levi and
Imogene Workman Rider. April 10, 1920, he married Letha Heil,
who survives. Surviving with his wife are one daughter, one
half-sister, one half-brother, his step-mother and one
grandson. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, and a
brother. He was veteran of World War I and a member of the
American Legion, the VFW, Round Table Club, Eagles Lodge,
and the Masonic lodge. He was past commander of the American
Legion. Through his many years of services at the Post
Office, Mr. Rider was known to many as "Bum".
Funeral services are to be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the

Schulenberg Knipple Crain, 65, formerly of New Bremen and
then of San Mateo, California, died early Thursday morning,
July 23, (1987) in Geneseo, New York, after 10 months of
cancer. She was born March 15, 1922 in New Bremen, the
daughter of Cade and Norma Heil Schulenberg. Her mother
survives in St. Marys. In Febraury of 1944 she married Warren
Knipple, who died during World War II in July of 1944. Other
survivors include two daughters, Candace and Cynthia Crain of
California, one son, Charles Crain, also of Califormia; and
one sister, Mrs. Valentin (Susan) Rabe of Geneseo, New York.
Mrs. Crain had been a member of Zion United Church of Christ
in New Bremen. She had worked for the U.S. Postal Service in

and Mrs. Charles Heil I died Tuesday morning March 13th
(1892) at the age of 27 years and 7 days. Deceased was a
lingering sufferer from a protracted illness, and for some
time past no hope was entertained for his recovery. He was a
quiet industrious, though feeble young man and his death is
mourned by a stricken father and mother, who within 4 years
now have buried three grown children. It was on Sunday
previous to his death that the family celebrated his 27th
birthday. That was the last birthday celebration for him.

Information: Private funeral services for Christian Frederick
William Henke, 60 who died at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon
(2-11-1929) at the Lima district tuberculosis hospital, were
conducted this afternoon from the late residence on North
Franklin street by Rev. N.E. Vitz, pastor of Zion's
Reformed church. Burial was had in the German Protestant
Cemetery. A son of the late Frederick and Eleanor Henke, Mr.
Henke was born October 8, 1868. Left an orphan at the age of
12 years by the death of his father, he went to New York City
shortly after reachiing maturity and on March 14, 1897 was
united in marriage with Miss Hoffman of that city. Two years
later they returned to New Bremen. His death Monday afternoon
attributed to an illness superinduced by an old injury
suffered while he still was living in New York and which
eventually left him a partial invalid. He had been a patient
at the Lima hospital for the last four weeks. In addition to
the widow, he leaves three sons, Walter, Frederick and Carl
Henke, New Bremen; two daughters, Mrs. Herbert DENNY, St.
Marys, Miss Agnes Henke, New Bremen; and two grandchildren.
Three other children preceded him in death. There are also
two sisters, Mrs. William HEINFELD, living north of New
Bremen, and Mrs. Will POISTER, Galion, Ohio..

Funeral services for Edward Ehrhardt, age 77 formerly of New
Bremen, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Vornholt Funeral
Home here. Dr. E. H. Bassler will officiate. Burial will be
made in German Protestant Cemetery. Friends may call at the
funeral home... Mr. Ehrhardt died Monday in Sarasota, Fla.,
where he had been living with his daughter, Miss Louise. He
had been ill with a complication of diseases. Mr. Ehrhardt
was born in Indianopolis on Dec. 25, 1886, the son of Mrs.
and Mrs. Wolfred Ehrhardt. His wife, the former Helen Heil,
preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 1963 and a daughter, Mrs.
Emory (Nancy Lou) KUEHNLE died April 14, 1964 in Findlay.
Surviving him are the daughter, Miss Louise, two
grandchildren, Beth and Emory Kuehnle 3rd., Cincinnati, a
son-in-law, Emory Kuehnle, Cincinnati and two sisters-in-law.
Mrs. O.B. RIDER and Mrs. Cade SCHULENBERG, both of St. Marys.
He was a retired New Bremen Merchant, a member of St.
Paul's United Church of Christ here and of Mercer Lodge
No 121 F & A.M., St. Marys.

Additional Information: Jeanette F. Guffey, 57, 310 N., Main
St., died following an extended illness at 9:30 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 28, 1996, at University Hospital in Columbus.
She was born Oct. 12, 1938 in New Bremen to Harold and
Frances (Ruwoldt) Ahlers. On Nov. 2, 1968, she married Jack
B. Guffey, who died in 1976. She is survived by her mother in
New Bremen; two sisters and spouses, Roslyn and Homer
STUTSMAN, Botkins, Elaine and Ernest COVAULT, Clearwater,
Fla.;a brother and spouse, William and Joan Ahlers, New
Bremen; and 12 nephews and nieces. Mrs. Guffey was formerly
employed at STAMCO and a Plastipak Packaging in Jackson
Center. The body will be cremated and there will be no
services... The preferred memorial is to the American Cancer
Society.

Information: March 3, 1945 NB Sun Herman Henry Kuck, 57, died
Saturday morning at Lima Memorial hospital where he was under
treatment for a kidney ailment. Mr. Kuck had been ill for
several years. He was born March 27, 1888 in Auglaize county,
a son of the late Herman Henry and Sophia Peters Kuck.
Thirty-four years ago he moved to Shelby county and engaged
in farming, being widely known throughout the community. On
October 15, 1927, he married Hattie Stienecker, who is left
to mourn his death together with three daughters Verna, Carol
and Shirley all at home. Brothers and sisters, also surviving
are George Kuck, Mrs. Henry NIEMEYER, Mrs. Henry WIERWILLE,
Mrs. Wesley KATTERHEINRICH, Mrs. Harvey KRUSE, Walter Kuck,
all of New Knoxviille, Mrs. Harvey SHUSTER of Kettlersville.
Funeral services at the Evangelical & Reformed Church in
New Knoxville with Dr. D. A. Bode officiating. Burial in
Pilger Ruhe Cemetery.

Peterson died at the home of his parents- in-law, Mr. and
Mrs. Wm. Milberg, Monday at the age of 40 years, 9 months and
5 days. He came here (New Bremen)about 2 weeks ago from
Pueblo, Colo., whither he had gone for his health, his family
remaining here in the meantime. Deceased was the State Supt.
for the Metropolitan Life Ins. Co., of New York with
headquarters in Hamilton, O. He was quite a prominent man in
his chosen profession. Burial took place at the German
Protestant cemetery, here, Wednesday, and Rev. Burtram

Bteinebrey, son of John Steinebrey, died Wednesday, June 7,
from comsumption at the age of 22 years, 7 months and 29
days. Deceased was born in New Bremen, Oct. 8, 1876. He has
lived with his father most of the time. He was one of the New
Bremen boys who enlisted in the Spanish-American war last
Spring, but prior to his enlistment the disease that carried
him away had already made inroads on him. Burial will take
place tomorrow and his army conrades, members of Company L.,

St. Peters church a half cenrtury ago died at the home of his
son-in-law and daughter, Rev. and Mrs. Hubert Konrad, 637
West Franklin, Elkhart, Indiana. He was in his hundredth
year, born November 5, 1853, in Stuttgart, Germany. Honored
in 1952 by "The Messenger" national magazine of the
Evangelical and Rrformed Church for 77 years of ministerial
service. Service at St. Peters Evangelical Reformed church,
New Bremen with burial in German Protestant cemetery.
Ordained July 15, 1879 at Schorndorf, Switzerland, emigrated
soon afterward with charges at Medaryville, Indiana, Bryan,
Ohio: LaPorte, Urbana and Wabash, Indiana... Delivered his
first serman at New Bremen on May 23, 1894 with 23 years

son of the late Theodore and Antoinette Voeckel Purpus. His
father lived to be 101, came from Lauterecken, Germany to
become one on New Bremen's best known business and civic
leaders...Leo was employed here, Dayton, Detroit and Minster.
Served as Municipal clerk of New Bremen in the 1930's and
in the past few years operated an insurance company founded
by his father... lifelong member of St. Paul Evangelical and
Reformed church, also Mercer Lodge F & AM, Sottish Rite
at Dayton... Survivors are the widow, Mrs. Pearl Cleveland
Purpus whom he married September 25, 1915 in Michigan, two
sons, Theodore, Minster, Thomas a Marine at Cherry Point,
N.C. a daughter, Mrs. Ray (Antoinette) KEHOE, Ann Arbor,
Mich. a step-daughter, Mrs. Bart (Anna) DESCH, Coldwater, 10
