Additional: William J. Settlage, age 84, R.R. 1, New Knoxville, died at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Joint Township Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since Tuesday, suffering with complications following a stroke. Mr. Settlage had been in failing health for several years. He had been an invalid since submitting to the amputation of his right leg last winter. Mr. Settlage was a retired farmer. He was born Nov. 13, 1877, on a farm southeast of St. Marys on state highway 29, the son of the late William and Mary Katterheinrich Settlage. On June 1 1911 he married Ida Wellman who preceded him in death on Dec. 26, 1960. Surviving him are a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Ruth) Bambauer, and two sons, Rufus and Adrian Settlage, all of R.R. 1, New Knoxville, 15 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Seven sisters, two brothers and two half brothers preceded him in death. There are many relatives and friends. Mr. Settlage had lived all of his life on the same farm until his retirement a few years ago when he and the late Mrs. Settlage moved to New Knoxville. Since her death he had made his home with his children. He enjoyed farming and took particular pleasure in gardening. He was a stong advocate of soil conservation. Mr. Settlage was a life-long member of the First United Church of Christ at New Knoxville. He also was a member of the German Bible Class and had taught Sunday School at various times. Funeral services are arranged for Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the First United Church of Christ in New Knoxville with the Rev. J.M. Michael officiating. Burial will take place in Pilger Ruhe cemetery. Friends may call at the Vornholt Funeral Home, New Bremen, after Monday noon until 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday when the body will be taken to the church to lie there in state until the hour of the services. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
